POSITION SUMMARY:

The Associate Director of Logistics and Order Management, Cell and Gene Therapy is responsible for management and execution of all Cell & Gene therapy product distribution and product movement logistics in support of product delivery. This includes establishing, championing and implementing end to end management of clinical study shipments with real-time tracking and troubleshooting of issues and also participate in building up our commercial order management capabilities. This person will manage cold chain logistics, 3PL management, carrier management, import/export compliance and product distribution and autologous cell & gene therapy order management for commercial distribution.

The role works closely with couriers, Clinical Operations, CMO scheduling staff, QA, Commercial and Supply Chain teams and other stakeholders to plan and execute product movement logistics. The Associate Director is integral to the success of the clinical and commercial programs at Vertex.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plays a key role in the commercialization strategy for Cell and Gene therapy programs including processes and technological requirements.
  • Management of all site to site materials movement including, but not limited to apheresis to manufacturing, manufacturing to site for product infusion, raw materials from 3PL to manufacturing.
  • Accountable for establishing programs/partnerships and sourcing with global 3PLs that can be used by the business to deliver outsourced services for warehousing, transport and international logistics, including but not limited to: raw material warehousing and kitting to support manufacturing, management of dry-shippers for incoming/outgoing product shipment.
  • Develop a robust logistics network to support Cell and Gene Therapy programs including supplier qualification, shipping validation and lane selection.
  • Participate in building up our commercial order management capabilities together with the Supply Chain Launch Team
  • Logistics Service Provider (LSP) Vendor Management
  • Manage partnerships and relationships with LSPs
  • Oversee performance management of LSPs
  • Identify, qualify, and implement new LSPs
  • Provide RFP support through the identification process
  • Provide ongoing contract support: CDA, MSA, SOW
  • Innovation and Continuous Improvement
  • Develop continuous improvement plans for Vertex’s Logistics infrastructure
  • Assist in the identification and implementation of continuous improvement opportunities and customer satisfaction opportunities
  • Identify, initiate, and manage cross-functional logistics projects using appropriate project management expertise and methodologies
  • Manage the operational aspects of ongoing projects and serve as liaison between project management, project team, Quality, and line management
  • Trade Compliance
  • Manage relationships between brokerage services and LSPs
  • Enforce corporate compliance as it pertains to the transportation of goods domestically and internationally
  • Support international trade compliance issues
  • Represent and contribute on behalf of the logistics functions when the organization
  • engages in strategic projects, business ventures or seeks to expand into emerging and new markets
  • seeks to rationalize, review or invest in technology platforms that affect the logistics organization directly or indirectly.
  • Responsible for compliance with regulations such as Good Distribution Practices.
  • Facilitate cross-functional team collaborations as well as support executive leadership and stakeholders within the business in developing business strategies, inclusive of long-term goals and objectives
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Proven supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to develop direct reports
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pharmaceutical manufacturing of biotechnology products, aseptic processing, cell therapy products and process development
  • Practical expertise with cGMP manufacturing and regulatory regulations and requirements for pharmaceuticals and devices
  • Has an excellent understanding of Good Distribution Practices in the Pharmaceutical Industry.
  • Knowledge of autologus cell & gene therapy order management principles
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative and fast-paced team environment, including business leadership to build alignment.
  • Ability to influence others in sensitive or difficult situations
  • Ability to think critically, and demonstrate troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to function efficiently and independently in a changing environment
  • Familiarity with various regulations including those related to hazardous shipments, employee safety, and freight classifications
  • In depth experience in Microsoft Excel (tables, arrays, formulas, conditional formatting)
  • Professional certifications and membership in Professional Associations (APICS CLTD, CSCP)
  • Has familiarity with managing Logistics with a network of both internal and external (CDMO) manufacturing sites.
  • Direct experience with managing order management and logistics of autologous Cell and Gene Therapy programs and short lead time cold chain operations.
  • Agile mindset to constantly adapt to a changing environment
  • Familiarity with Transportation Management System (TMS), BI Analytics Tool and Visibility software
  • Has a working knowledge of Trade Compliance requirements.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires some years of post MBA experience in strategy consulting or related fields,
  • Master’s degree in business or Supply Chain or Industrial Engineering or finance preferred
